Meet the Artist

Joseph Phillips – aka “Studio Joe” – is an award-winning mixed-media artist and an experienced art instructor. His work is enjoyed and owned by fine art collectors nationwide as well as individuals who simply like his style.

Joe’s innate artistic talent led to landing his first official job as an artist for a commercial art studio in Washington, DC. While there, he built his knowledge and expertise by looking over the shoulders of seasoned artists who were generous enough to share their knowledge with the “new kid on the block.” As his skills grew, so did demand for his work. He became an illustrator for McGraw-Hill and later free-lanced for marketing and professional organizations throughout the Washington, DC area. His commercial art career included many unique commissioned works, including an elaborately designed and highly acclaimed book presented to a U.S. President by a special interest group. Other work included illustrations for American Chemical Society publications, the Food Marketing institute, the National Waterways Conference, and British Aerospace.

Nearly three decades ago, Joe yielded to his true passion — creating art that is accessible to the public at large. He left the world of commercial art and never looked back. Eventually he developed his own unique style of painting in watercolor which he now shares through “Just Add Water,” his highly praised painting classes which he continues to personally conduct in Fairfax, Virginia, and will soon be offering in the Shenandoah Valley. Although Joe’s art often showcases his sense of humor, it always respects the subject of each painting.

At the encouragement of his fans (including his family) Joe has agreed to take a step into the digital age by offering his one-of-a-kind, customized and commissioned work to the online community. Who knows? He may eventually be persuaded to offer a digital version of “Just Add Water”! Stranger things have happened!

Joe enjoys life in Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
